The Management of the Ghana Education Service according to the released of 2019/2020 Academic Calendar for Basic Schools, wishes to inform you that 2019/2020 BECE Examination is scheduled to start on 15th to 19th June, 2020.

When Will 2019/2020 BECE Examination Start?

Candidates in the third year of Junior High Schools approved by the Ghana Education Service are eligible to register to take part in the Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE).

Students who are registered will partake in the core subjects English Language, Social Studies Integrated Science and Mathematics.

Meanwhile, the elective subjects include Ghanaian Language and Culture, Basic Design and Technology, Religious & Moral Education, Information and Communication Technology, as well as French which is optional.

The Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) is the main examination that is used to give students admission into secondary or vocational schools in Ghana. It is written after three years of junior high school education

According to the time table earlier released by Ghana Education Service, the 2020 BECE Exam will commence on Monday 15/6/2020 and ends on the Friday 19/6/2020.

GES 2019/2020 Academic Calendar for Basic Schools

A statement signed by the Ag. Director of the Basic Education Division of the GES, and copied to websaet.com indicates that, all schools are required to adhere to the specified dates and effectively use the stipulated instructional hours.

When Will 2019/2020 BECE Examination Start?

the statement added that basic schools are to re-open on September 10th, 2019 for the 1st term of the 2019/2020 academic year with a commemoration of “My First Day at School”.

The academic calendar is for basic schools only. The 2019 Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) will take place from 15th June to 19th June 2020.

First Term

The first Term of the 2019/20 Academic Year shall begin from September 10 to December 19,2019.

The length of the first term shall be 15 weeks including a one-day full time school for only teachers known as a Continues Professional Development Day (CPDD).

The CPPD shall take place on the 30th October 2019 and there shall be no school session for the students on that day.

Revision and End of Term Examination shall take place from the 9th to the 19th December 2019.

School shall vacate on December 19,2019 ,and reopen on January 8,2020 ,making an 18 days break for vacation.

Second Term

The Second Term of the 2019/20 Academic Year shall begin from January 8 to April 8,2020.

The length of the Second Term shall be 14 weeks, including a one-day full time school for only teachers known as a Continues Professional Development Day (CPDD).

The CPPD shall take place on the 20th February 2020 and there shall be no school session for the Students on that day.

Revision and End of Term Examination shall take place from the 30th of March to the 8th of April 2020.

School shall vacate on April 8,2020 and reopen on May 5,2020 ,making a 26 days break for vacation.

Third Term

The Third Term of the 2019/20 Academic Year shall begin from May 5 to July 30,2020.

The length of the Third Term shall be 13 weeks, including a one-day full time school for only teachers known as a Continues Professional Development Day (CPDD).

The CPPD shall take place on the 28th May 2020 and there shall be no school session for the Students on that day.

Revision and End of Term Examination shall take place from the 20th to the 30th of July 2020.

There shall be another Continues Professional Development Day (CPDD) for Facilitators only on August 3,2020.

School shall vacate on July 30,2020 and reopen on September 8,2020 ,making a 39 days break for vacation.

BECE

Basic Education Certificate Examination shall begin from the 15th and end on the 19th of June 2020.

About BECE

The BECE is both for certification and selection to Senior High Schools and Technical Institutions.

The results of the examination are based on Continuous Assessment and the external examination. The Continuous Assessment forms 30% whilst the external examination forms 70% of the total assessment.

Candidates in the third year of Junior High Schools approved by the Ghana Education Service are eligible to register to take part in this examination.

The examination is conducted nationwide in June each year.

Registration for the examination is done electronically in October/November each year. Statement of Entries, CDs together with the registration fees should reach the appropriate Office of the Council by specified dates that will be determined by the Council from year to year.

Subjects written

Subjects examined during the sitting are English Language, Social Studies Integrated Science and Mathematics as core subjects.

The rest which comprises the elective courses include Ghanaian Language and Culture, Basic Design and Technology, Religious & Moral Education, Information and Communication Technology with an optional paper in French.

Grading of candidates

Candidates are graded based on performance in the external examination (objective and written), and Continuous (Internal) Assessment marks provided by the schools.

A nine-point numerical scale is used in grading the candidates with Grade 1 denoting the highest performance and Grade 9 the lowest.

The results of the examination are released in August to enable successful and qualified candidates to enter Senior High Schools and Technical Institutes at the beginning of the academic year.
